This is a a short film about industrial design.
Almost all products today are designed on computers with CAD programs, and built with computer CNC machine tools.
So its easy to forget that trial and error - 'intuitive' engineering, or 'thinking with your hands', is still essential.
Directed by Gary Alexander and
produced by Liz Queenan

WHY THINGS GO WRONG,
1982
My first attempt at writing for TV. This was a science program directed by
Mick Jackson (who since became a successful Holliwood director). It was about
engineering reliability, comparing my own contraptions with serious bits of engineering.
The film won a few prizes, and made it possible for me to get my Secret Life of Machines
series accepted a few years later.
It
was written as six 'chapters' so it splits neatly into the three parts
